catch-22 [-twentɪ'tu:]∎ catch-22 (situation) situation f sans issue, cercle m vicieuxⓘ Catch-22 Cette formule provient du roman éponyme de Joseph Heller, publié en 1961, dans lequel catch-22 est le nom donné à une situation sans issue. Pendant la deuxième guerre mondiale, un pilote de l'armée américaine essaie de trouver un prétexte pour ne pas partir en mission. Mais le règlement stipule que seul un pilote reconnu comme malade mental peut être dispensé de mission; tout pilote qui cherche à être exempté montre qu'il a conscience du danger encouru en mission, et fait par là même preuve de sa santé mentale, et doit donc continuer à voler. Autrement dit, seuls peuvent être dispensés ceux qui ne cherchent pas à l'être. On utilise cette expression pour parler de toute situation en forme de cercle vicieux. On dira par exemple it's a catch-22 situation, I can't get a job without experience, but I can't get experience without a job ("c'est une situation sans issue: je ne peux pas trouver de travail sans expérience préalable, mais je ne pas acquérir d'expérience sans travail"). -
